Weather:
We usually enjoy quite a few sunny days during the month of May, but the weather is variable and there is still a possibility of rain which can vary between very short and light showers to the kind that sets in for a whole day. The average temperature is 22 degrees C.
The olive and elderberry trees come into bloom.
So does the acacia which fills the air with a strong scent of honey.
(Please note that we can’t open the pool until the acacia flowers have dropped. This usually happens towards the end of May.)
The House Martins are busy building nests and you can see them swooping and diving, and hear them chattering loudly to eachother.
What to do:
Given the weather, this is a perfect time for hiking, or exploring the ancient hilltop towns: not too hot, not too cold.
Events:
- Sagra degli Asparagi. Arcevia. Every year on May 1st.
- San Vittore is the patron saint of our village and we celebrate on the nearest weekend to his saint day: 8th May.
- Botontano. Sagra delle Cresciole di Polenta
- Palio di San Floriano (Jesi)
- ‘Cantine aperte’. Last weekend in May. This is when all the local wine producers open their doors and let you taste their wines.
In Season/What to look out for at the market:
Broad beans (fava beans)
Notes from the garden May 2010:
23rd first passion flowers bloomed
